Armed Homeless Man Arrested After Roaming Cooper Rd and Commerce Lane

Berlin Township Police received a call at 1:13 p.m. on June 5 that an armed male was walking along Cooper Road toward Route 73.

According to the caller, the armed man was carrying a gun in his backpack and was making terroristic threats.

The suspect, who was identified as homeless man Lewis O. Tilton III, was captured by Waterford Township Police officers and turned over to Berlin Township Police just after 7 a.m. Monday morning.

Tilton has been charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and making terroristic threats.

"We realize it takes a collaborative effort to include the community we serve," said the Berlin Township police department in a press release. Unfortunately, many citizens' daily lives and routines were disrupted yesterday, however the outcome we sought, which was taking Lewis Tilton into custody without anyone being injured, was achieved."

He was previously wanted by law enforcement stemming from an incident that happened in Berlin Township on Sunday, June 5.

The Berlin Township Police Department has extra police present at Berlin public schools today as a precaution.

Residents and other law enforcement agencies in the area were commended by the Berlin Township Police Department.
